We had a good meeting this month. There was decent attendance from all the departments which allowed us to cover a variety of topics. We also held nominations for the office of Vice President due to the resignation of current VP Barry Leonard.
We started off the meeting covering many different topics ranging from the alcohol bottles found in the trash can on site to the up and coming contract negotiations. We talked about the safety aspect here at Harrison after what had happened at Bruce Mansfield Power Station with the Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) exposure. Finally, we covered the different work environments we all must work in with the multiple departments, and how the people we work with can define our day.
After considering the conversations mentioned above I got to thinking about our safety and how that could influence us. It is easy to get distracted with personal issues or working with someone you don’t see eye to eye with. The mistake that took the lives of two people and injured four others at Bruce Mansfield could happen here as easy as anywhere else. No one knows the specifics of that situation yet as the investigation is still under way, but think about the things we do out here daily that is just part of our job. At any moment one little distraction such as what I am going to have for dinner, how will I get my kids to their activity, my supervisor is being hard to deal with, etc. can end in the same way it did at Bruce Mansfield. I implore you to stay focused and do everything as safely as possible, even if it takes a little longer to get done. We don’t want any of our union Brothers or Sisters to get hurt.
Lastly, we held nominations for the Union Vice President opening created by Barry Leonard’s resignation. Congratulations to Stewart Whitehair, our new Vice President. He was nominated unopposed and accepted the job. He will finish the current term from here on out.
As always, if you have concerns, opinions, or just want to be informed please come to the next meeting. October’s monthly meeting will be held 10-10-17 at the Brickside Bar and Grill at 1545. Hope to see you there.
