This month’s meeting had a larger turn out than normal. We covered a lot of different topics this go around. We also received contract negotiation updates this month and were informed on how things are going so far. Lastly, we had Barry Leonard our current Vice President announce that he would be stepping down.
It is always nice to see new people at the meetings, and we had quite a few this month. There was a large group of new attendees from coal handling. There were also some faces we haven’t seen in a while from several other departments. It is good to get fresh perspectives from some of the members. Also, the meetings are a good place to meet a lot of the people from different departments you may not get to see otherwise.
As always, we talked extensively about things that affected individuals and continue to affect people throughout the plant. This was especially true this meeting because of the contract negotiations we are starting into. I do like to hear some of the issues I may not know about simply because I don’t get to work with other departments. I find the meetings a good place to keep in touch with the pulse of the plant.
The thing I am sure most of us want to know about was the status of the recent contract negotiations. We were updated what we were looking at with this round of negotiations and what to expect going forward. The negotiations only lasted about a couple of days as each side started to open the lines of communications. Please remember that this is just the beginning, and right now it is a little too new to have much progress. The update was really how union got out some of what we were thinking and the company got out some of what they were thinking. There is plenty more to come on that in the near future.
Finally, we closed the meeting on a sadder note than usual with Barry Leonard announcing that he was stepping down from the role of our local Union Vice President. He is planning on moving soon and will no longer be at the plant. If you see him around please thank him for all that he has done (and will continue to do in a different capacity) and I know we all wish him luck as he moves South.
Our next meeting has been moved up to September 5th 2017 to hold special nominations for our new Vice President. We will be voting for the next Vice President at the following October meeting. If you are thinking of nominating someone or just want to put your two cents in please join us. We will be at the Brickside Bar and Grill around 1545.
